    Strategy

Bastion is a hero with two main forms. The first being a somewhat mobile bipedal form with a submachine gun, the second being a completely immobile turret form. Both of these perform in unique ways, and must be utilized to their fullest.

The most notable part of Bastion's kit is Reconfigure, which turns it into a stationary turret gun. This turret has some of the highest damage output in the game, being able to shred through shields and heroes alike. However, it poses two major weaknesses to Bastion. The first being immobility, which causes you to become an easy target. The second is a weak point that appears on Bastion's back in turret configuration, faster heroes can easily get behind you and kill you quickly with this weak point.

Bastion is played best when you mix both configurations together. It should be noted that Recon Configuration's submachine gun is still a decent weapon if you are accurate. Do not be afraid to change back into Recon in order to run to a better spot, but try to do so behind cover.

You should also know how to correctly utilize Bastion's Self Repair. It is a powerful self heal, healing at the rate of 25% per second, lasting until cancelled. It forces the player to stay immobile, and any damage will knock you out of it, so it is best to use behind cover. Most notably this allows you to stay healthy in Sentry Configuration, as you can use it to repair yourself between fights. This paired with its damage makes Bastion's turret form extremely deadly to take head on.

Out of all the other heroes in the game, it works incredibly well with Reinhardt, Torbjörn, and Symmetra. All three of these heroes provide it with survivability, whether it be a barrier, shields, or armor. The characters that can give you great deals of trouble include Genji, Widowmaker, Hanzo, and Reaper. Genji and Reaper both have the ability to get close to you very easily while in Sentry Configuration, Genji particularly can ricochet your bullets back at you, which can kill you in seconds. Widowmaker and Hanzo can capitalize on your immobility, killing you from far range.

Bastion's Ultimate Ability is Configuration: Tank. In this mode, it gains high armor and an explosive rocket attack. These rockets deal very high damage, and knock enemies away from it. As such, this ultimate is great at killing heroes with lower health, and provides fairly decent crowd control. It should be noted, that while it provides high armor, death is still very possible in this configuration. This form is best used in fights with teammates, particularly when trying to get enemies away from an objective. It is also usable in both of its other configurations.

    • Carefully consider where to place yourself in turret mode. Change positions often (when you can safely move), especially whenever you feel that the enemy knows your location or is forming a strategy against you. Try to use the element of surprise to your advantage. Bastion does especially well in narrow corridors and unexpected positions.
    • Bastion excels at destroying slow, high health targets, such as Winston, Roadhog, Reinhardt, and a flying Pharah; however, in some situations you should prioritize killing high damage-dealing enemies.
    • When in turret mode, Bastion's weak point is behind him, and can be seen from almost any angle except from directly in front of him. Be vigilant for flankers, but try not to expose your weak point while dealing with them.
    • Bastion can go down relatively quickly when faced with focused fire from the entire enemy team, especially if they have high damage-output. Prioritize taking out high damage-output enemies as quickly as possible, or retreat.
    • In some cases, you may want to use Bastion's ultimate defensively. When at low health, the added armor and mobility can facilitate your retreat.
    • Bastion can be very effective against most characters, but is incredibly weak against the countering strategies listed below.

    Good counters to Bastion

    • Icon-dva D.Va: D.Va can use her Defense Matrix to block all of Bastion's fire for a period, allowing other teammates to finish it off easily. Note that D.Va herself does not deal enough damage at any range to kill Bastion before it kills her. As Bastion, learn the animation and sound effect for D.Va's Defense Matrix and kill in a different direction, heal, or retreat while it is active.
    • Icon-genji Genji: His deflect can use Bastion's immense DPS to quickly destroy it. Genji can also use his high mobility to get behind Bastion and destroy it. As Bastion, learn the animation and sound effect for Gengi's deflect and immediately stop shooting for exactly 2 seconds. Use this time to kill a different target or heal yourself.
    • Icon-hanzo Hanzo: Can repeatedly peek around a corner, or shoot it with Scatter Arrow or his ultimate without exposing himself. Hanzo must wait at least 1 second between shots, so as Bastion, use that second to damage another target, and then try to anticipate his attack.
    • Icon-pharah Pharah: Can repeatedly peek behind a corner to shoot a rocket and hide, which will kill Bastion in a few shots while minimizing return fire. Do not fly at Bastion, you are a sitting duck in the air.
    • Icon-Roadhog Roadhog: His hook can grapple onto Bastion, pulling it out of its spot and forcing it into Recon mode, where it is nearly defenseless. As Bastion, try to set up turret-mode only where you have lengthy sight of all approaches, and don't allow Roadhog to get within grappling range.
    • Icon-tracer Tracer: Hard to hit, can easily flank Bastion and escape, and her ultimate kills Bastion instantly. Do not play as Tracer if there is no flanking route to Bastion. As Bastion, be sure to get headshots on Tracer so she dies before she can recall, or just get a teammate to deal with her.
    • Icon-widowmaker Widowmaker: Similar to Pharah, can peek around a corner and kill it with high damage shots while not exposing herself long enough to take significant return damage. As Bastion, it's probably best to switch to recon mode, take cover and heal when receiving fire from Widowmaker; then set up in a location where she is unlikely to be able to get sight of you.

    Story

    Icon-bastion

Once a frontline combatant in the devastating Omnic Crisis, Bastion has all but lost its combat programming and now explores its surroundings, fascinated by the world and its inhabitants.

Though Bastion's new nature is gentle, its core combat programming takes over when the unit senses danger, utilizing its entire arsenal to eliminate anything it perceives as a threat. This has led to instances of conflict with the few humans it has encountered, and it tries to avoid populated areas in favor of the wild, uncharted regions of the world.[2]

    Background

Originally created for peacekeeping purposes, Bastion robot units possessed the unique ability to rapidly reconfigure themselves into an assault-cannon mode. But during the Omnic Crisis, they were turned against their human makers, forming the bulk of the omnics' rebel army. Following the resolution of the crisis, nearly all of the remaining Bastion units were destroyed or disassembled. To this day, Bastion units still symbolize the horrors of the conflict.[2]

    The Last Bastion

Bastion was programmed with the mission to attack Stuttgart alongside many other Bastion units, but it was severely damaged during the fight. It lay dormant in the Black Forest near Eichenwalde, forgotten for over a decade.[2][3]

    Bastion awakes

    Bastion re-activates

One day, Ganymede started to build a nest on Bastion's shoulder, and discovered its visual sensory screen. Realizing it was a robot, Ganymede roused it. Bastion awoke, and remembered its directive -- Stuttgart. It began to make its way to the city, while admiring the beauty of the forest around it and forming a bond with Ganymede. However, a woodpecker's drilling startled it, reminding it of gunfire, and it reconfigured itself into an assault-cannon and began to fire wildly, scaring off Ganymede and destroying the forest around it. Recomposing itself, it realized what it had done and sadly continued toward its destination.

In the meadow between the forest and Stuttgart, Bastion discovered tens of destroyed Bastion units. Bastion knelt beside one with its head torn open and memory components exposed, and accessed the fallen unit's last memories. Suddenly, Bastion was reliving the war, and saw its fellow Bastion units fighting German soldiers before being wiped out by Balderich von Adler. With new clarity as to its purpose, Bastion reverted to its combat protocol and again marched toward Stuttgart, ready to attack the city. Ganymede found it and landed on it, offering a twig in friendship. Bastion struggled with itself, and finally became peaceful again, turning away from Stuttgart and back to the forest with Ganymede on its finger.[4]

    Trivia

    • Bastion's original Ultimate ability was a remote mine that could be driven like an RC car before burrowing into the ground. This was later changed to Configuration: Tank because Remote Mine didn't feel like it fit the character.[5] A similar mechanic is currently used as Junkrat's RIP-Tire.
    • Its Sentry mode used to be armed with a front-facing shield and Bastion had a rotation limit of 60 degrees in frontal cone. Both of these features have since been removed, but it can still be seen in old ability previews.
    • A Bastion portrait is available in StarCraft II for those who purchased the Origins Edition.[6]
    • The Eichenwalde map contains multiple Bastion corpses, a reference to the Overwatch lore and The Last Bastion short.
