Hit points

From Overwatch Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Hit points (HP) represent how much damage a hero or object can take. The health bar shows the amount of HP, divided into bars of 25. There are three types of HP: health, armor, and shields; some abilities can grant heroes temporary armor or temporary personal shields.

If a player has less than a quarter of their HP remaining, their location will be visible to all friendly Support heroes. When the player's HP drops to 75 or lower, a gasp sound effect is played and blood appears around the borders of the screen. If a player's health reaches 0, the hero dies.

Health[edit | edit source]

The most basic form of HP is health. Health is depleted when there are no armor or shields to protect it, and is the first to be replenished when being healed.

Armor[edit | edit source]

Some heroes have a special type of HP called armor. Armor takes damage instead of health and can be gained back through healing (after the hero's health has been fully restored). For every instance of damage, armor reduces the damage taken by 5; if the damage is less than 10, armor halves the damage instead. As such, armor is extremely effective against attacks that consist of multiple instances of small damage, such as shotguns, beams, and guns that shoot very fast; and is less effective against single instances of high burst damage, such as Hanzo's Storm Bow or Junkrat. Even if the armor runs out, as long as there was at least 1 point of armor before taking damage, the damage will be reduced.

Armor is the very last damage modifier to be applied. For example, if Bastion in Sentry mode would take 100 damage, Bastion's Ironclad passive reduces it to 80, and then armor chips away another 5, making the damage 75. If Bastion would take 10 damage, Ironclad reduces it to 8, and then armor halves it since 8 is less than 10, making the damage 4.

Temporary Armor[edit | edit source]

Some heroes have abilities that provide temporary armor. Temporary armor reduces damage like regular armor, but cannot be healed. Temporary armor is damaged before regular armor or health.

Abilities that can give temporary armor[edit | edit source]

Brigitte:

  • Repair Pack: Provides a target up to 75 temporary armor when the healing is surplus. Lasts 5 seconds
  • Rally: Provides self and nearby allies up to 100 temporary armor at a rate of 30 armor per second. Lasts indefinitely until destroyed

Torbjörn:

  • Overload: Provides self 150 temporary armor. Lasts 5 seconds

Shields[edit | edit source]

Some heroes, barriers, and Symmetra's Teleporter have a special type of HP called shields. Shields take damage instead of armor or health and can be gained back through healing (after the hero's health has been fully restored). On heroes, shields automatically regenerate after no damage is taken for 3 seconds at a rate of 30 shields per second, regardless of the hero's current health. Similarly, shields on Reinhardt's Barrier Field, Brigitte's Barrier Shield, and Symmetra's Teleporter also regenerate at various rates after taking no damage for 2 seconds. Shields found elsewhere do not regenerate. Despite this, all shields share a common feature that they are the only type of HP that EMP can damage and destroy.

Temporary Personal Shields[edit | edit source]

Some heroes have abilities that create temporary personal shields (also called temporary shields[1]). Temporary personal shields are susceptible to EMP like regular shields, but they do not regenerate and cannot be healed. Temporary personal shields are damaged before regular shields, armor, or health.

Abilities that can create temporary personal shields[edit | edit source]

Doomfist:

  • The Best Defense...: Creates up to 150 temporary personal shields to self, 35 for each hit with a normal ability and 75 for each hit with Meteor Strike. Decays 3 points per second after 1 second

Lúcio:

  • Sound Barrier: Creates 750 temporary personal shields to self and all allies within range. Decays 125 points per second

Wrecking Ball:

  • Adaptive Shield: Creates 100 temporary personal shields to self, plus 100 additional shields per enemy within range. Lasts 7 seconds without decay. Does not give ultimate charge if damaged
