Revision as of 21:19, 20 February 2021

There were originally 12 maps at the launch of the game for Standard Play (three for Assault, Escort, Hybrid, and Control). Since then, 9 additional maps have been added. New maps are released roughly every 4 months.

Arcade maps are released arbitrarily, but they often come with an event.

Alongside the launch of Overwatch 2, "multiple" new maps for each of the core game modes, including the new Push mode, will be released. So far, four of these maps have been announced.

Trivia

  • Maps are usually released in January, May, and September.
    • The September map is usually revealed during gamescom alongside an animated short. In 2018, Busan and the animated short Shooting Star were revealed at the Korean Fan Festival instead, which happened simultaneously with gamescom. In 2019, Blizzard did not attend gamescom and thus no map was announced there.
    • The January map used to be revealed during BlizzCon alongside an animated short and a new hero; however, as of 2018, Blizzard has stopped doing this. Their reasoning is that they felt map announcements lose their impact if they are announced too early.[2]
  • Rialto and Havana were revealed through Overwatch Archives, and were both playable for the event before they were released for standard gameplay.
  • India was first shown off in the Overwatch 2 Gameplay trailer at BlizzCon 2019, but was not officially named or announced until BlizzConline.
  • Gothenburg was first shown to be an Assault map in the Overwatch 2 Gameplay trailer at BlizzCon 2019, but later during BlizzConline, Jeff Kaplan confirmed that the game mode would be retired from competitive, and that there will be no new Assault maps in Overwatch 2.
