There were originally 12 maps at the launch of the game for Quick and Competitive Play (three for each mode). Since then, 8 additional maps have been added. New maps are released roughly every 4 months and are in-between hero releases. The September map is revealed during gamescom.
Arcade maps are released arbitrarily, but they often come with an event.
Lúcioball gets a new stadium each year.

Trivia
- The January map used to be revealed during BlizzCon; however, as of 2018, Blizzard has stopped doing this. Their reasoning is that they felt map announcements lose their impact if they are announced too early.[1]
- Maps are usually released in January, May, and September; however, there has been two exceptions so far: Horizon Lunar Colony (June) and Paris (February). Interestingly, they're both Assault maps.
