History

Pre-Crisis

In the decade leading up to the Omnic Crisis, Germany was faced with issues both internal and external. Internally, like many countries, Germany was witnessing the proliferation of AI and omnics displacing human labor. Not wanting to leave its population unemployed, the government began backing sectors of labor where AI and robotics had not sufficiently displaced human workers. One of these fields was deep-sea exploration. Prior to this, engineers had been working on exoskeletons and energy shielding, and these submersible exoskeletons operated from ports along the North Sea. Some of these projects received funding from the German Armed Forces.

Externally, Germany had to deal with growing instability in Europe, and wanted to improve its national security. This resulted in the creation of the Crusader Initiative. The Initiative was propagandized from its inception, in order to sell to the public that it was purely a defensive force.

When the Omnic Crisis began, Germany was one of the countries attacked by Anubis. When the war broke out, Germans from all walks of life applied to join the Crusaders, but despite the surge, Anubis's forces outnumbered Germany's 10:1. The Crusaders were instrumental in Europe's eastern front, but suffered catastrophic losses in the Battle of Eichenwalde, even if it was still a human victory. Around the time of the battle, Berlin was put on its highest alert level.

Leipzig was also attacked by the omnics before the war's conclusion.
