Omnium-declassified

An omnium

Omniums were megafactories constructed by the Omnica Corporation.

Background

Omniums were automated self-powered, self-repairing[1] and self-improving facilities.[2] These factories were powered by fusion cores that, if destroyed, could result in nuclear fallout.[3]

History

Omnium-designs

Various omnium designs

The omniums were conceived by Omnica in the company's twilight years. At the time, domestic robots were in high demand globally, but factories staffed by human workers were prone to delays, not to mention that humans required sleep. Omniums would streamline the manufacturing process, leading to better supply and lower overhead. Cities around the world vied for the honor of hosting an omnium facility, offering tax breaks and land grants.[1]

Omnium

The Detroit omnium

Detroit was chosen as the site of Omnica's flagship facility after extensive public review. The omnium was built and brought online in record time, but after less than a month, concerned citizens called for a full investigation, citing breach of contract. Omnica had promised jobs for local workers, which had failed to materialize. The first reviews conducted by local government uncovered shortcuts in the construction and licensing process. Deeper audits followed, both financial and material, quickly embroiling federal agencies and revealing how Omnica had overextended itself.[1]

The omniums were eventually dismantled following evidence of corporate fraud, but later reactivated of their own accord and launched attacks against humanity in a conflict that would come to be known as the Omnic Crisis.[2]

Known Omniums

Omnium3

The Australian omnium

  • Australia: The Outback omnium and its omnics were given the Australian omnium and its surrounding land after the Omnic Crisis in an attempt to make long-term peace. Dissatisfied human residents created the Australian Liberation Front, which destroyed the omnium and unintentionally turned the Outback into an irradiated wasteland.[3] Its remains were used to create Junkertown, and the Junkers continue to pilfer the omnium.[4]
  • East China Sea: There is an omnium located underwater in the East China Sea. It is here where the Gwishin Omnics are created. Thanks to the conditions, the omnics created by this omnium appear with an aquatic design. [5]
Omnium2

The Nigerian omnium

  • Nigeria: The Nigerian omnium was a massive manufacturing omnium. The OR14 "Idina" line of security robots were built here before the start of the Omnic Crisis.[6]
  • Sweden: An omnium was planned for Stockholm despite local protests. Construction began, but was cancelled before the omnium was completed.[1]

At least one original omnium was created by Anubis during the Crisis. It was "built by machines for machines," and as such, lacked human safety features.[10]
