Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is a city on the southeast coast of Brazil.

Background[ | ]

Rio is connected to the hyperloop line.[1]

History[ | ]

Rio

Rio during the Omnic Crisis

Rio was a battlefield during the Omnic Crisis.[2] Overwatch took part in a battle there, prevailing against the omnics.[3]

At some point after the conflict, the city was identified as a hotspot by Overwatch.[4]

A Better World[ | ]

Decades after the Omnic Crisis, Calado and the Vishkar Corporation were in competition for (re)development of the city. Rio's mayor favored Calado's proposal, due to the company's history with Rio. This was in the midst of protests from Rio's townsfolk, protesting against any re-development of their neighborhoods. However, as the Calado building was destroyed in a detonation (likely caused by Vishkar itself), the contract went to Vishkar. Months later, Rio had a new city center.[5]

Part of the original deal or otherwise, Vishkar secured a contract to redevelop large tracts of the city. The people were told that the development would improve their lives. However, that promise never became a reality. Vishkar imposed controls on the residents in the name of building a more orderly society: enforcing curfews, cracking down on what the company perceived as lawless behavior, and exploiting the populace as a cheap labor force. Sonic technology was employed to suppress the people. However, city resident Lúcio Correia dos Santos stole the technology and used it against Vishkar, leading a popular uprising that drove out the corporation.[6]

The Battle of Rio[ | ]

We're being overrun. Null Sector is everywhere. I'll hold them as long as I can.

Null Sector attacks Rio

Null Sector attacked Rio, quickly overrunning much of the city. Lúcio fought against the attacking omnics, along with civilians, and fighter jets tried to engage Null Sector's command ship. However, Null Sector forces continued to pour into the city, and while the arrival of Overwatch helped stem the tide, Null Sector still had the means to deploy forces ad infinitum. The team split up—alongside Lúcio, Reinhardt, Tracer, and Mei would fight their way into the ship, provided transport by Echo in the team's shuttle. Winston and Mercy would help evacuate the civilians, while Brigitte and Genji ran a distraction. The plan worked, and the command ship was destroyed.[7]
